Béla Osztojkán, a Hungarian Rom, was raised in the town of Csenger on the Romanian border. He was profoundly marked by his origins, and all his stories are set in the region where he grew up. A respected figure in the Gypsy cultural and political arena, he is the author of several novels, poems, and short stories. He received the Prix Bezeredj in 1997. Éditions Fayard published these last two works of fiction just before his death in 2008.
