Nathalie A. Cabrol

Foreword by Damien Chazelle

(Le Seuil, 352 pages, 2023)

Following the great reception of her memoir Journey to the Frontiers of Life, Nathalie A. Cabrol, astrobiologist at the SETI Institute and director of the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Universe, returns with a book of science for all, revealing recent discoveries and advances in astronomy.

In this lively, didactic, and gripping essay, Cabrol details the progress in the search for life in the universe. Addressing in turn the history of our solar system, the search for exoplanets, signals and distant galaxies, the types of civilizations or lives that we hope to find there, she invites us to participate in this extraordinary unfolding odyssey, of which the James Webb telescope’s images are only a tiny reflection.

On the Treshold of New Horizons is an invitation to a new kind of journey in search of life elsewhere in the universe of which "the absence of proof is not the proof of absence". This is a stimulating yet accessible book on space research in the line of Hubert Reeves' Stardust.

Nathalie A. Cabrol was born in Paris in 1963. An astrobiologist at NASA since 1998, she was appointed Director of the SETI Center in 2015. She recounts her exceptional career in her first book, Voyage aux frontières de la vie (Seuil, 2021).
